Never underestimate the power of a spreadsheet.
Hang on – I’m not talking about a super geeky thing with all kinds of crazty intricate formulas. I’m talking about simple and easy. Yeah, you can tart it up a bit with colors and formulas if you really want to get your admin to make it “pretty” and easy to read. Ultimately, a good spreadsheet is all about:
What are you doing, what are you not doing in your business. How many blog posts did you write? How many transactions came through? How many blue widgets sold versus red widgets? How much do you need to charge to at least break even?
When you’ve got a good spreadsheet in place, you can make tactical decisions which will grow your business instead of only relying on “what I think is happening.”

How many times did you sell “widget A”?
How many times did someone get referred to you by your website?
How many calls came in on the phone?
How much money did people spend in your store each day?
Pick one thing and track it this month.
When you start to see a trend (like people don’t spend Wednesday’s) then you know that day is where you need to increase your marketing. What about a special, flyer, email promotion to get people in the door on Wednesday?
Go on, track SOMETHING.
