My Philosophy

There’s nothing more important than getting to know someone before investing time and energy to make magic in the world.  You know what I’m talking about. We’re in business for ourselves for a reason: we wanna change the world, have an impact, be nourished and affect others and work with the kind of people we love.

Passionate about REAL Small Business

Come on now, we all know that even though the Small Business Administration defines a small business as one with a maximum of 100-1500 employees they have a different focus than us small scrappy businesses.

We’re local and national. We are the auto mechanic with 10 guys fixing cars. We are the 4 person printer broker. We are the 2 person graphic design firm. We are the college prep franchise owner. We are the independent personal trainer. We do what we do because we don’t want to do it someone else’s way. We have a better way. Or maybe we just want to work in our slippers at 3am.

I love small business. I love when I spend my money at my hairdresser, she spends the money I give her at the local car mechanic. And she spends her money at a web design and marketing firm they got to know online. I love the relationships and webs we create as small business owners. I’m called to create and support those webs and relationships.

The Rubber Chicken and Steel Toe Boots of Love

I have a wacky sense of humor. I carry a rubber chicken with me and have one sitting on my desk because business is f-u-n. If it’s not fun, my rubber chicken reminds me to change my mood.  I have a pair of steel toe boots of love because we all need a loving kick in the ass sometimes. I surround myself with friends who “get” it, have their own chicken (or fart pot, or traffic cone…) and their own pair of boots.

Start Here, End There

I mentor and teach how to roll over the speed bumps of small business growth. Just because the agenda begins at one place of pain or frustration in the business process, doesn’t mean we avoid other areas of the business. It’s really tough to segregate areas of business. A goal of improving sales may end up in a conversation about the values and fears held as an individual. It’s all connected.

If you’re working with me you …

…have a can-do, positive attitude.

I am an optimist. I work with people who can see possibilities and are willing to risk. I know women and men who have turned their lives from despair to amazing achievement. If you know you are a glass half empty person, please don’t engage with me.

…understand that all things are connected.

Working on one part of your business means we’re going to work on more than just one part of your businesses. If you think we’re separate and you can do it all on your own, please don’t engage with me.

… like to have fun. I love my business and I love what I do.

What I do is not work. There are things that aren’t my favorite, and I still see them as fun. If your life and business are a drudge, and you are past the point of “I just don’t give a crap,” I’m not your gal.

…are a do-er, not just a talker.

At some point the rubber has to hit the road. If you’re not serious about discovering and changing, then hiring me is a waste of time and energy on both sides.

…see “failing” as an opportunity.

I see something not working as a universal nudge that I should try a different tack. Some things aren’t going to work right out of the gate. There is perfection in imperfection and opportunity in getting it wrong.

…know you’re the only one responsible for you and your business.

I believe that I create my life. I create exactly what I have in life. I cannot create something for you. I can guide, sow seeds and demonstrate. If you don’t take ownership of your life and business, I can’t help you.

…have a sense of humor.

My rubber chicken makes me laugh. If you’re unsure of my style and my sense of humor, then check out my blogs. If you get it, then we’ll be okay.

Master of your Destiny, Captain of your Fate

All of my content, ideas and exercises, which I created for myself over the years, is based on my own personal experiences and what worked for me. I tell it like it is. I assume you are capable of making your own decisions and taking action related to your business. I assume you have the capacity to research topics I write and talk about and have the motivation to learn about yourself and make your business the best it can be. There are plenty of other ideas and exercises in the world that may also work for you. I expect you to take what you need and make your own educated decisions, just as I did in my business journey. You alone are the master of your own destiny. While external resources, like me and my services, provide a flashlight along the path of small business and entrepreneurship, you alone decide what you create and how you create it. Friends, family and fools may offer you advice, give you encouragement, and even critique your efforts. Ultimately, you alone are the one making it happen and responsible for your decisions and actions.

My Role As Mentor and Teacher is NOT Therapy

Mentoring and coaching is NOT therapy. If you’ve got some deeper psychological issues popping up, there are some great therapists who can help. I’m not a therapist.
